How it Works
Stem cell banking offers a way to freeze our stem cells in time. We cryopreserve your cells so that the day your cells are thawed, they are effectively the same age as the day they were frozen.
All that is needed to preserve this vital resource is a sample of your bone marrow.
What is the Bone Marrow Aspiration Procedure Like?
Dr. Paul Abramson has extensive experience performing medical procedures in office and hospital settings. He ranks the bone marrow aspiration procedure as "more significant than a blood draw, but much simpler than surgery."
All procedures are performed in our comfortable, modern downtown San Francisco office. After pre-medication (if you wish, it's not required), you are put in a comfortable position on an exam table. The physician then uses ultrasound to precisely localize the posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS). Local anesthesia is then used to numb up the area. A bone marrow aspiration needle is then inserted, and two syringes of bone marrow aspirate are withdrawn. The needle is then removed and a waterproof dressing applied.
The procedure itself usually takes less than 15 minutes. However, time is required to wait for medications to take effect, to set up and prep, and to tidy up afterward. Most patients are in and out of the office in about an hour, sometimes less.
Can I have medications for pain and anxiety before the procedure?
Yes. Some people wish to have the procedure done with only local anesthesia (lidocaine or marcaine). This allows the quickest recovery and immediate return to work.
However we also offer pre-medication with a painkiller and/or a sedative, for those desiring greater comfort during the procedure. In some cases we can offer low-dose ketamine which has dissociative and analgesic properties.
